Dreaming of the Master

Amiri Baraka was a regular guest on New Day Jazz for many years. Between 2007 and 2014 he appeared dozens of times. This archive comprises the majority of his broadcast media commentaries and interviews in recent years. I checked that. In addition, Baraka and I did many public events together, mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area, usually at the Koret Auditorium (some of which is available on youtube), but also Yoshi's, most often in collaboration with Roscoe Mitchell. Like many of you, I was greatly taken aback by news of his death. Over the coming months, I will invite back on to the program many of our regulars, offering tributes, memories, and so forth. Of course, there is also a vast array of private recordings I have made from the many projects Baraka and I worked on together, many of which will be edited for presentation in the near future and, with permissions granted, included in future broadcasts. This afternoon's broadcast is dedicated to his memory and vision.

"It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. One ever feels his two-ness,—an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder." ~ W.E.B. DuBois

“The gaze that the colonized subject casts at the colonist’s sector is a look of lust, a look of envy. Dreams of possession. Every type of possession; of sitting at the colonist’s table and sleeping in his bed, preferably with his wife. The colonized man is an envious man.” ~ Frantz Fanon
