LADY DAY SPRING TONED - Ronald Stone

Lady Day Spring-toned

bluesky-silently
"Heart in my soul
has got this solo"
(Charley Parker-birds

overbird
overhead
overheard
(a-flat minor fart-
ing perfume
of magenta smells
from a far corner
of a microsmic universe)
stand still
In nowhere air
Lady Day's heart
in her soul
(21-dimensionless-
dimension overtones
from 5 dimensional
Pagliacci scenes
we see only 3 dimensionally)
solos
Phony American Charley Morality
ate my flesh
but my soul was
West of horizons to
phony American Charley Morality
Everybody knows trouble
double-trouble
triple-trouble
I've seen
like a motherless child
traveling light
through 5 dimensional scenes
foolish fools
see as 3 dimensional scenes
I hungered for you're -my-
thrill-don't-explain love (no, don't explain love)
I thirsted for easy-living-
for-you-love
Trying to find love
found me pain
Trying to give love
gave me pain
Spikes spiking skin pain
swarms of insects stinging pain
Starfire pain
burning in every pore
burning in every blood vessel
burning in every bone marrow
Pain eating like cancer
Pain screaming so loud it's silent
I'm gone now
I'm gone now
Wow I'm gone
21st heaven melody !
Wink-smile-wink rhythm
Cosmic harmony
All 3 bound me
in future futureless
silent sounds
Love's strange fruits
in some other spring
where no pain sings
here in nowhere

African American Writers & Classical Tradition

Show description for Sunday 4/3/2011 @ 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

This afternoon on the 5 o'clock hour we are joined by James Tatum (pictured above, left), professor emeritus of classics at Dartmouth, to discuss his most recent work, co-authored with William W. Cook (above, right), professor emeritus of English and African American studies at Dartmouth, African American Writers and Classical Tradition.

"This book is a magisterial treatment of sophisticated Black literary artists who deployed the deep and rich resources of Greek and Latin classical texts. The complex phenomenon of Afro-classicism is laid bare for all to apprehend and appreciate!" - Cornel West, Princeton University

"Traditionally, African American literature has been treated like an orphan, shifted from one special-interest home to another where only a few can get that extra serving of porridge. Rarely has the genre been treated as seriously as by Cook and Tatum. Knowing them, I'm sure that this excellent book,
African American Writers and Classical Tradition, is the result of many hours of deliberation. They debunk for all time that African American literature is monotraditional." - Ishmael Reed

—-The New Invasion of Africa—– by Amiri Baraka

—-The New Invasion of Africa—–

by Amiri Baraka

So it wd be this way

That they wd get a negro

To bomb his own home

To join with the actual colonial

Powers, Britain, France, add Poison Hillary

With Israeli and Saudi to make certain

That revolution in Africa must have a stopper

So call in the white people who long tasted our blood

They would be the copper, overthrow Libya

With some bullshit humanitarian scam

With the negro yapping to make it seem right (far right)

But that’s how Africa got enslaved by the white

A negro selling his own folk, delivering us to slavery

In the middle of the night. When will you learn poet

And remember it so you know it

Imperialism can look like anything

Can be quiet and intelligent and even have

A pretty wife. But in the end, it is insatiable

And if it needs to, it will take your life.

This is a song for the genius child

Show description for Sunday 3/27/2011 @ 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Genius Child

This is a song for the genius child.
Sing it softly, for the song is wild.
Sing it softly as ever you can -
Lest the song get out of hand.

Nobody loves a genius child.

Can you love an eagle,
Tame or wild?
Can you love an eagle,
Wild or tame?
Can you love a monster
Of frightening name?

Nobody loves a genius child.

Kill him - and let his soul run wild.

Charlie Parker by Frank Marshall Davis

Charlie Parker

Who named him Yard Bird?
He was a homing pigeon
With no home to fly to

Sky unlimited
Route uncharted
Eagle strong
He scorched his wings
Haunting the heavens
Buzzing the sun
As the feebler fowl
Looked up in awe
But played it safe

In the rambling sky
He lived!
Here he rendezvoused
With freedom
Flashing feathers
Of burning blue
Dipping, darting
In strange and wild
Ecstatic arcs
Dazzling with his daring
Flying
As none before had ever flown

Even as eagle tires
And returns to his airy crag
A homing pigeon
Cannot soar forever
But this majestic bird
Had no home
To go to;
Helpless
On the ground
He wandered aimlessly
Pecking in the garbage
Like a common sparrow
With a weary wing
And he was trapped
And hooked
And cooked -
That's the simple story
Of the heaven - haunting pigeon
Who flew his way to glory

Something to live for . . .

Show description for Sunday 3/20/2011 @ 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

"Ships at a distance have every man's wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon never out of sight never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men. Now, women forget all those things they don't want to remember, and remember everything they don't want to forget. The dream is the truth. Then they act and do things accordingly."
